Outdoor Family Photo Sessions in Essex County, NJ: Capturing Joy for Parents and Kids

Capturing moments with your children is a top priority each year for many of my clients. Choosing to do this outdoors-- especially in Northern New Jersey-- adds layers of benefits that go beyond just beautiful pictures. The options for locations for an outdoor shoot in our area are quite literally endless. Whether it be a park, an arboretum, a garden or just your backyard-- being outdoors creates a unique environment that encourages natural interaction, exploration, and genuine smiles. Family photos outside can be a fun experience for parents and kids--I promise!

Natural Light Enhances Photos

One of the biggest advantages of outdoor photography is the use of natural light. If you know me, I'm a natural light photographer at heart--whether inside or earthside. I have come to embrace artificial lighting to the max, but sunlight provides a soft, flattering glow that enhances skin tones and brings out vibrant colors like no artificial light can.

Encourages Movement and Play

Indoor photo sessions can sometimes feel stiff or forced, especially for young children who may not want to sit still. Outdoors, the environment invites movement and play, which helps kids feel more comfortable and engaged.

Parents can encourage their children to run, jump, or explore, turning the session into a fun activity rather than a chore. This dynamic setting allows photographers to capture candid moments of laughter, curiosity, and connection that tell a story beyond posed portraits.

Especially with small children, outdoor sessions are less confined and let kids feel free. An outdoor setting helps everyone brighten their mood and those feelings come across loud and clear in photos.

Builds Stronger Family Bonds

This particular location was requested by my clients-- who love an outdoor shoot! Their kids loved exploring the grounds and when it was time to stop and pose, they were more than willing! Spending time together outside during a photography session offers more than just pictures. It creates shared experiences and genuine smiles. Parents and kids can interact naturally, whether by playing games, exploring nature, or simply enjoying each other’s company.

These moments of connection often show in the photos, reflecting genuine affection and closeness. This session definitely became a memory in itself, not just a way to document their memories.

Gives the Opportunity for Those Golden Hour Captures

My number one reason to choose and outdoor session is to capture your family in that gorgeous golden hour light. There is absolutely nothing like it in the eyes of a photographer. The light as the sun is going down is unique, warm and picture perfect. This light is nothing an artificial light can replicate. If you've had a session with me in the fall, I push for a 4pm start time. If we're doing a summer shoot, I suggest a late nap for the kids and a start time of 730 or 8pm!

Tips for a Successful Outdoor Photography Session

  • Choose the right time: Early morning or late afternoon offers the best natural light, known as the golden hour. Avoid harsh midday sun that can cause strong shadows.

  • Pick a familiar location: Kids feel more comfortable in places they know, which helps them relax and be themselves.

  • Bring snacks: Favorite toys or snacks can keep children happy and engaged.

  • Dress warm or cool depending on the season: Choose clothes that suit the weather and allow kids to move freely and not feel too cold or too hot.

  • Be patient and flexible: Let the session flow naturally. Some of the best photos come from unplanned moments.

Hope this was helpful for anyone considering an outdoor photo session!
